Each year, TCMA provides educational sessions and opportunities to recognize and honor colleagues. Several programs are now underway to promote the ideals of the association. Please take time to review and promote each of these programs in your region. The deadline for application for each program is January 16, 2009. Internship The Texas City Management Association Internship Program is designed to assist graduate or undergraduate students who are currently enrolled in an accredited Texas college or university program, specifically those seeking degrees in public administration, urban affairs, or closely related fields. The TCMA Internship Program was established to provide an opportunity for dedicated students who wish to prepare themselves to assume careers in city management. If your city would like to participate in this program, please review the Host City Requirements on page 3 of the application and contact Kim Pendergraft at kim@tml.org or 512-231-7400. Professional Awards This program recognizes and honors outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to local government in Texas. The three individual awards, which are open to any FULL member of TCMA, include:
Terrell Blodgett Academician Award: This award recognizes an academician who has made significant contributions that have promoted careers in local government, developed beneficial research, and encouraged relationships between academia and those working in the city management profession. City Council of the Year Award: This award recognizes and honors outstanding city councils that have made significant contributions to local government in Texas. Jack Brown is no longer the city administrator for the City of Roscoe. He is the new city administrator for the City of Roby. Miguel Cantu is the new city administrator for the City of Somerset. Kelly Cooper, current assistant city manager for the City of Colleyville, is the interim city manager for that city. Mary Daly is the new city administrator for the City of Clyde. Christopher Duque is the new city manager for the City of Nederland. Jennifer Fadden is no longer the city manager for the City of Weatherford. Jerry Blaisdell, current assistant city manager, is the interim city manager for that city. Iris Hill is no longer the city manager for the City of Laguna Vista. Paul Hofmann is no longer the city manager for the City of Kerrville. Mike Hayes, current city attorney, is the interim city manager for that city. Larry Lott is the interim city manager for the City of Royse City. Daniel Adam Miles is the new city manager for the City of Hewitt. Joe Painter is the new city administrator for the City of Castroville. Don Q. Reynolds is no longer the city administrator for the City of Cottonwood Shores. Hans Schneider is the new city administrator for that city. Pieter Sybesma is the interim city administrator for the City of Woodcreek. Daniel Valenzuela is the new city manager for the City of Eagle Pass. Ralph J. Weaver retired as city administrator for the City of White Oak on September 30, 2008. Doyle Duke, former city manager for the City of Graham and TCMA Life member, passed away on Friday, September 26, 2008. Doyle was 96 years old. Funeral services were held on September 29 at the First United Methodist Church. Please keep Doyle’s family in your prayers. TCMA-ICMA Membership Incentive Program The TCMA-ICMA Membership Incentive Program seeks to encourage existing Texas City Management Association (TCMA) members from smaller cities (populations less than 10,000) who are not members of the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) to join ICMA. It is the intent of TCMA and ICMA to provide financial assistance to eligible participants. In order to allow the eligible TCMA members to experience the benefits of ICMA membership, ICMA will provide a complimentary trial membership to the eligible participants for the first year of the program, and TCMA will subsidize the cost of membership during the second year of membership. The membership incentive program will allow participants to experience the benefits of ICMA membership, which will assist in justifying the funding for the annual dues from their employer beginning in the third year. Gonzalez, assistant city manager for the City of San Antonio, for being the recipient of the ICMA Assistant Excellence in Leadership Award. This award recognizes a local government management professional who has made significant contributions toward excellence in leadership while serving as an assistant to a chief local government administrator or department head. The TCMA Management Messenger recognizes TCMA members who were recently appointed to an International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Committee. The Membership Committee will meet on November 7 at Dallas Love Field in the Dallas Room.
Membership Dues Renewal Reminder Membership dues renewals are in progress. Members can renew online at www.tcma.org. Simply click on the “About TCMA” link and select “Membership Renewal.” A box will be provided to indicate whether you have fulfilled the ethics requirement, along with a field to state when and where the requirement was fulfilled. Dues can be paid with a credit card, and member profiles can also be updated from the same link. Please make a note of these upcoming TML educational events:
