Each new school year provides an opportunity to introduce educators to Our Town, Texas. This curriculum is designed for elementary, middle school, and junior high students. Our Town, Texas uses informative, interactive classroom activities to help students master the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for social studies and history. It also follows the guidelines for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). Our Town, Texas was written by teachers and has been pilot tested by teachers. Activities are independent and can be taught separately or as a group. Claud Arnold is no longer the city administrator for the City of Willow Park. He is now the economic development administrator. Candy Scott, current city secretary and finance director, is the acting city administrator for that city. William Baine is the new city manager for the City of Huntsville. Joe Cantu is no longer the city administrator for the City of Malakoff. Paul Catoe is the new city manager for the City of Madisonville. Mary Daly is the new city administrator for the City of Clyde. Raymond De Los Santos is the new city manager for the City of Alice. Christopher Duque is the new city manager for the City of Nederland, effective September 30. Angel Escobar will serve as interim city manager for the City of Corpus Christi following the resignation of current city manager Skip Noe, effective September 1. Joey Highfill is no longer the city manager for the City of Lake Worth. Vicki Mikel, assistant city manager and director of finance, is the acting city manager for that city. James Minor will no longer be the city administrator for the City of Keene, effective September 19. Karen Philippi is no longer the city manager for the City of Royse City. Victor Treviño is no longer the city manager for the City of San Benito. Hector Jalomo, current public works director, is serving as the interim city manager. Courtney Sharp, current city manager for the City of Mount Pleasant, will be the new city manager for the City of Midland, effective October 1. Paul Vazaldua will no longer be the interim city manager for the City of Elsa, effective September 1. Linda Weller is no longer the city manager for the City of Gruver, effective August 28. Kenneth Williams, current city manager for the City of Diboll, will be the new city manager for the City of Buda, effective September 12. Beginning the first week of October, members will receive membership due renewals. Members will be able to renew online at www.tcma.org. Simply click on the “About TCMA” link and select “Membership Renewal.” A box will be provided to indicate whether you have fulfilled the ethics requirement and a field to state when and where the requirement was fulfilled. Dues can be paid with a credit card, and member profiles can also be updated. The TCMA Management Messenger introduces and welcomes Don and his wife Deborah have been married for 37 years and have two sons, both of whom are Fort Worth firefighters. His hobbies are golf, jogging, watching all other sports, and enjoying his grandchildren. The TCMA Management Messenger introduces and welcomes T. Flemming to his new position as the city administrator for the City of Sundown. T.’s appointment as the city administrator began on July 28. T. began his public service career in 1988 for the City of Brady. He left the City of Brady as the assistant city manager/director of utilities in June 1997 for an appointment as the director of utilities for the City of Lamesa. In April 2005, T. began serving as the city manager for the City of Rockdale. T. received an associate’s degree from Cisco Jr. College and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Arlington. He is also a Certified Public Manager. T. has four grandchildren, plus one “on-the-way.” He enjoys music, golf, card-playing, and judging various cook-off competitions. The TCMA Management Messenger also introduces and welcomes Richard Tow to his new position as the city manager for the City of Cameron. Richard was formerly the city administrator for the City of Alvord for 11 years. He is the current TCMA Barney L. Knight CPM Scholarship recipient. Richard and his wife Denise have been married 20 years. They have two sons. Their oldest son, Trey, is a student at Texas Tech University, and son Thomas is an eighth grader. Richard enjoys hunting, boating, and all activities in which his sons participate. These include football, band, snow skiing, and water sports.
Gary Brown, city manager for the City of Floydada, received the Texas Public Power Association (TPPA) Seven Hats Award. The award was presented at the 2008 TPPA Annual Meeting Awards Breakfast held on July 23 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin. The Texas Public Power Association represents Texas’ publicly-owned electric utilities. Members include municipal utilities, joint action agencies, river authorities, and rural electric cooperatives. The Seven Hats Award recognizes outstanding leadership and dedication by an official of a TPPA system that serves less than 5,000 customers.
