TCMA Internship Program

Photo of energetic peopleThe City of Sugar Land hired Marissa Bazan as an intern under the TCMA 2008-2009 Internship Program.  The city recently reported that Marissa has been an outstanding addition to their organization.  Under the supervision of Karen Daly, assistant city manager, and Jennifer May, management assistant II, Marissa demonstrated a strong work ethic, producing high quality products.  She helped develop proposed policy for the use of a 311 calling system and inventoried the city’s internal policies.  She developed a proposed system to keep policies updated and available to employees.

Marissa states that the program has provided a valuable contract between the academic view and the practitioner’s real-world situation.  She found it valuable to ask questions about her graduate courses’ transferability to the workplace.  She was able to learn and experience a city in emergency mode during Hurricane Ike and plans to use her experience with the 311 service as her graduate capstone project.

If your city would like to participate in the TCMA Internship Program and you meet the criteria listed on page three of the application, please contact Kim Pendergraft at 512-231-7400 or kim@tml.org.  An application can be found at www.tcma.org.  Click on the “Programs” link and select Internship.”

TCMA-ICMA Membership Incentive Program

The TCMA-ICMA Membership Incentive Program seeks to encourage Texas City Management Association (TCMA) members from smaller cities (populations less than 10,000) who are not members of the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) to join ICMA.  It is the intent of TCMA and ICMA to provide financial assistance to eligible participants.  In order to allow the eligible TCMA members to experience the benefits of ICMA membership, ICMA will provide a complimentary trial membership to the eligible participants for the first year of the program, and TCMA will subsidize the cost of membership during the second year of membership.  The membership incentive program will allow participants to experience the benefits of ICMA membership, which will assist in justifying the funding for the annual dues from their employer beginning in the third year.  For more information and an application, please visit www.tcma.org.  Select the “Programs” link and select the “TCMA-ICMA Membership Incentive Program.”   The deadline for applications is January 16, 2009.
